We discussed hue (colour) saturation, bias and value and considered where particular colours appear on a colour wheel and why. Then we tried our hand at colour mixing exercises based on four photographs of:- a colourful lolly, three pears, a still life of a jug and fruit and a landscape. Each of these presented different colour mixing problems and after starting with the highly saturated coloured lolly, we moved on to the less saturated colours shown in the other photos, which all had a greater value scale.
There was silence and the occasional muttering for some time while each of us tried matching the paints we had to the colours in the photographs. In many cases it was very difficult because some of us had too few colours to be entirely successful and also because the inks used on a photograph are not always possible to match exactly with paint.
As we mixed each colour we noted how we had achieved each mix so although we may not have been entirely successful every time we still have a colour swatch stating how we achieved that particular colour that we can keep for future reference.
I think we all agreed it was a useful and fun exercise that we can replicate again and again, much as a musician practises scales.
Here are our quick colour sketches that I think are really great.
Next meeting Monday July 18th, we plan to try again to paint outside but this time at Burford House Gardens. Meet at 10.30 at the Village Hall to car share, or if it is easier for you, travel direct to Burford House to arrive just after 10.30. If you are making your own way there, please let me know so that we don't wait for you at the Village Hall.
For those who haven't been there before there is a nice cafe, an interesting shop and a salvage yard as well as a pond with ducks, beautiful gardens and a garden centre. Even if the weather is not kind we may well be able to find somewhere sheltered to paint. (I may just pig out on their millionaires shortbread.) Hope that you can make it.
